The 4 Cottages are situated on the north side of the A689, 2 miles east of Wolsingham and 2 miles west of the A68 / A689 junction. Turn onto the lay-by and into the farm entrance. Granary Cottage stands to the left hand side of the main house and the Stable and Harvest cottages are accessed from the drive to the right hand side.
Main line railway stations at Durham (15 miles) and Darlington (25 miles). A branch line operates from Darlington to Bishop Auckland (9 miles) but the service is infrequent. Plans are in place to operate a heritage line connecting Wolsingham with Bishop Auckland and may be implemented during 2010.
A rural bus service runs past he cottages between Stanhope to the west, connecting with the Upper Weardale service to Wearhead, and Bishop Auckland via Crook to the east and south with connection possible to other parts of the county. Timetables are provided. Local taxi services exist but must be prebooked – contact numbers are available.
We ask guests to try to arrive between 2 and 5 p.m. Keys are awaiting collection at our Farm Shop and Café just beyond the cottages and well signed. If you are unable to arrive by 5, please ring us and we’ll arrange to leave the keys in the door of your cottage or another pre-arranged place. We always divert our calls to a mobile number if we can’t be at the farm office on arrival days and someone will be with you within a few minutes.
Please note that we do not now live in the Farm House at Bradley Burn.
Guests are asked to vacate the cottage by 10a.m. on the day of departure and please to leave the keys in the cottage door, on the outside. If you have any queries during your visit or need assistance try the Farm Office which is usually open each morning from 8a.m. to 1p.m. or ring us at any time.
For all cottages cars can be driven very close to the door. We don’t have marked bays but there is ample parking space at or near each cottage. The entrance drives are tarmac, with paved courtyards outside the Stable Cottages and Granary Cottage.
There are entrances at 2 levels at Granary Cottage. The courtyard leads to an arched door leasing to the entrance hall via a step of 20 cm. Leading from the hall are 2 bedrooms, one up 2x10cm steps, the house bathroom two large storage cupboards, a further cupboard housing the central heating boiler and a washing machine, and a staircase to the first floor. Flooring is non-slip ceramic tiling in the hall and bathroom and short pile carpet on the stairs and in the bedrooms
The front bedroom has a 5 ft bed with access from both sides and a height of 50 cm for floor to top of mattress. A built in wardrobe provides generous hanging space and the furnishings are completed by a small sofa, dressing table, and bedside tables. Bedside lamps are wall fitted and a side lamp is provided on the dressing table.
Fire escape is via the door from the hall to the courtyard or the fully opening windows from the room to the courtyard at ground floor level.
The courtyard bedroom has a 6ft zip – link bed with access from both sides. The height from floor to mattress top is 63 cm. Other furniture in this room includes a wardrobe, dressing table and bedside tables. Lighting is the same as in the front bedroom. There is a door leading directly from this room to the courtyard giving a fire escape route, down 1 40cm step.
We can provide a folding bed or cot in either bedroom but this reduces circulation space. We can alter the position of some furniture if this helps access in individual cases.
The bathroom has a standard bath, wall mounted basin, and w.c. Height of the bath is 53 cm. and grab handles are fitted.
The staircase is a straight flight with 11 x 20cm steps and handrails on both sides. It leads to the open plan living/dining/kitchen area. A stair gate is available.
Seating consists of 2 sofas and an armchair, seat height 48cm., plus a more upright tub chair. The dining table has 6 chairs without arms and a table with clear space under of 64 cm. TV with DVD player and freeview channels plus a radio / CD player and a full bookcase are provided.
There is direct access from this area to outside via a door with 2 steps of 25 and 36 cm. down to a grassed area. A handrail is fitted and cars can be parked close to the bottom of the steps. This provides a fire exit and may be easier for those with walking difficulties than access from downstairs. Lighting is a mix of dimming overhead lamps, side lamps and reading lights.
The kitchen area is in an L shaped extension of the space and has standard units and top cupboards with built under fridge, freezer dishwasher and oven/grill. This has a drop down door, and the counter top hob has 4 sealed electric rings. Electricity switches are between top and bottom kitchen units. Flooring in the kitchen area is vinyl, with short pile carpet in the rest of the room.
Leading from the open plan area is the third bedroom, up 2 x 10cm steps, with twin 3ft wide x 65cm high beds built-in wardrobe bedside tables, dressing table/chest. A further door leads from this room to outside with a step up inside of 15cm. and down outside 2 of 10cm. Short pile carpet is fitted.
The ensuite shower room has an electric shower in a corner cubicle 110 x 110 cm, with a step of 30 cm into the enclosure. Grab handles are fitted. The basin is wall mounted. Flooring is slip resistant ceramic tiling.
Access to the main door is up a ramp and over a small threshold. This entrance is not suitable for wheelchairs. There are no further steps inside the cottage. The entrance door opens into a lobby with short pile carpet. The same floor covering is used throughout the cottage except in the bathroom and kitchen areas. A built in cupboard gives wardrobe and storage space. Leading from the lobby are the bedroom, bathroom and open plan living/dining area.
All doors in this cottage are wider than average, at 80cm.
The bedroom has a 4’6” double bed, height from floor 54 cm., accessible from both s plus a 3’ bed 54 cm high accessible from one side only. Bedside tables and lamps, a chest/dressing table and a dressing stool complete the furnishings.
The bathroom door opens outwards into the lobby. An electric over bath shower is provided and the bath height is 56 cm. A pedestal basin and standard W.C. have no special adaptations. Flooring is good quality vinyl.
The living area is furnished with a dining table height 62 cm, and 4 dining chairs, all easily repositioned if required. A dresser with enclosed bottom cupboard and open shelves house books, leaflets etc. A traditional sofa and chairs have a seat height of 60cm and are set around a feature stone fireplace with a raised hearth and flame effect electric stove. Coffee and side tables, T.V. with freeview and DVD player are provided, and lighting is a mix of ceiling, freestanding and reading lamps. Double French doors lead from this area to outside and wheelchair access is possible via a temporary ramp. We can remove surplus furniture if required to improve circulation space.
The kitchen is furnished with traditional units, including a built in dishwasher, freestanding electric cooker, fridge/freezer and a counter top microwave. Vinyl flooring denotes the area and contrasts with the white units.
The Stable Cottages.
The rooms in the Stable cottages are quite small as these are barn conversions and we were not allowed to extend. The compact nature of the accommodation makes it useful for people with walking difficulties, as there are no large open areas or corridors and no internal steps
A slight slope leads to the 80 cm wide front door over cm threshold. The lobby leads to the bathroom through a sliding door, open width also 80cm. Bathroom flooring is vinyl. Bath height is 50 cm and an over bath shower is fitted. There is no useful sideways transfer space to the W.C.
The bedroom has a 4’6” double bed access from both sides with bedside tables and lamps, a wardrobe and chest of drawers. As the room is small circulation space is limited and to accommodate a cot the bed has to be moved so one side is against a wall.
The kitchen has standard units, an under worktop fridge with ice making compartment and a freestanding electric cooker. The table height is 60 cm. and 4 easily moveable chairs are provided. Flooring is vinyl.
The sitting room has a sofa seat height 60cm with 2 matching chairs, TV with freeview and DVD player, bookshelves and coffee tables, overhead lighting and a reading lamp. A wide glazed door leads directly from this room to the courtyard. The flooring in living room lobby and bedroom is close pile carpet.
This is very similar to no 1. except that there is a shower room rather than a bathroom, with a quadrant cubicle 110cm x 75.The height of shower tray is 32 cm. and flooring is non-slip ceramic tiles.
